Step 1 - Product Type

The type of products you wish to store will determine the drawer layout arrangement that you will need. You need to review the types of products you plan to store and arrange them according to height. Group your items as close as possible. The height of your product should fit the drawers so you will achieve the maximum benefit. Any excess head room translates directly into wasted space.

Step 2 - Measure objects to be stored

Determine drawer heights you need by measuring the heights of objects to be stored. Check out the standard drawer heights available to get an idea of valid available sizes. Read the usable drawer height in inches column as your guide. Generally it is a good idea to select a few standard heights that will fit your products. This will help to simplify your system requirements.

Step 3 - Determine the square feet you need

Measure the size of your items. Based on your normal inventory levels, determine in square feet the area needed for each height group. The formula for square feet is length x depth. You convert from square inches to square feet by dividing square inches by 144. Convert square feet to square inches by multiplying square feet by 144. You may want to look at standard drawer partition layout kits to help get an idea of what is available.

Step 4 - Calculate the total square feet needed for each drawer size

Take the square footage figure arrived at in the previous step, for each height drawer and divide by 4.4, which is the actual square footage available in drawers that are in 30" wide cabinets. Example: If 21 square feet is required for one of the groups, divide 21 by 4.4 for a total of 4.77. Round to the next whole number. The example would require five drawers of that size. Keep in mind that the usable square footage may be less depending on the type of accessories used to subdivide the drawer.

Step 5 - Plan for future expansion

Generally you should plan for future expansion. This is an excellent point for you to add storage capacity. Future expansion can be allowed for by increasing total square feet for any height grouping by your anticipated percent of expansion. Example: With 20% anticipated expansion multiply 21 square feet by 1.20 for a total of 25.2 square feet, divided by 4.4 to equal 5.7. This rounds up to require 6 drawers. Five drawers for current needs and one drawer for future expansion.
